This service honors the veteran's military service, and the flag is generally given to the next-of-kin as a keepsake. Eligibility includes veterans who served during wartime, died on active duty after May 27, 1941, served after January 31, 1955, were peacetime veterans discharged before June 27, 1950, certain persons who served in the organized military forces of the Commonwealth of the Philippines, and certain former members of the Selected Reserves.”

By law (10 U.S.C. § 1491), an eligible veteran's funeral can include, on request, an honors detail of at least two service members who fold and present the U.S. flag to the family and play Taps. The funeral director usually makes the request and will need the veteran's DD214 or other discharge papers.
