Planning a veteran's funeral and VA burial
Eligible veterans, their spouses and dependent children can be buried in a VA national cemetery at no cost, and VA's burial benefits apply to cremation too. VA also pays a burial allowance: up to $1,032 for a qualifying death that wasn't service connected, and up to $2,000 when it was. Funeral honors and burial benefits by branch
Every branch must provide the same minimum: an honor guard of at least two uniformed service members who fold and present the flag and play Taps. Each branch page covers what else that branch's detail may add, its customs and music, and how to request honors. VA burial benefits are the same for every branch.

A veteran who wasn't dishonorably discharged, and an eligible spouse or dependent child, can be buried in a VA national cemetery at no cost. VA says its burial benefits cover cremation and burial at sea as well. The amounts here apply to deaths on or after October 1, 2026, as listed on VA.gov.
