Veteran Services

From the home's own description

“Moreland Funeral Home assists honorably discharged veterans' families with obtaining a flag, a presidential memorial certificate, a military grave marker, and arranging military service honors. This service typically includes a two-person detail from the veteran's branch of service to play Taps and fold the flag for presentation to the family. A three-volley rifle salute can also be arranged based on the availability of local veteran organizations. Additionally, honorably discharged veterans are eligible for burial in a national cemetery at no charge to the family, which covers the gravesite, opening and closing of the grave, and a grave vault. A DD214 discharge paper is required to facilitate these services, and the funeral home can direct families to Franklin County Veterans Services for assistance in obtaining this document.”

How to request military funeral honors

By law (10 U.S.C. § 1491), an eligible veteran's funeral can include, on request, an honors detail of at least two service members who fold and present the U.S. flag to the family and play Taps. The funeral director usually makes the request and will need the veteran's DD214 or other discharge papers.

VA suggests asking at least 48 to 72 hours before the service. More on what honors include and how to request them.
