They help families obtain a United States flag to drape the casket or accompany the urn, headstones and markers from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Presidential Memorial Certificates signed by the current President. They also offer guidance on burial and interment allowances for soldiers who die while on active duty, and partial reimbursements for non-service related deaths. Veterans from all military branches, regardless of rank or whether they died in combat, are eligible for these services.”

How to request military funeral honors

By law (10 U.S.C. § 1491), an eligible veteran's funeral can include, on request, an honors detail of at least two service members who fold and present the U.S. flag to the family and play Taps. The funeral director usually makes the request and will need the veteran's DD214 or other discharge papers.
