This includes traditional military funeral honors such as the folding and presentation of the American flag to the next of kin, and the playing of Taps by a bugler or recording. These honors are performed by an honor guard detail with at least two Armed Forces members, one representing the veteran's branch of service. Additional honors can include draping the U.S. flag over the casket, a three-volley rifle salute, and a final gravesite salute. The funeral home also assists families in contacting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to access benefits. These benefits may include headstones and markers for eligible veterans and dependents, Presidential Memorial Certificates, memorial plots in national cemeteries (or headstones for plots elsewhere), burial in a national cemetery (including gravesite, opening/closing, grave box, and perpetual care), and information on potential burial expense reimbursements. Eligibility for military funeral honors is verified by the veteran’s DD-214 discharge papers, covering active duty members, Selected Reserve members, and former military members discharged under honorable conditions.”
