“Bowser Minich Funeral Home provides extensive support for honoring veterans. They coordinate military funeral honors, which are free for eligible veterans and require verification via DD-214 discharge papers. These honors include, at minimum, the folding and presentation of the American flag to the next of kin and the playing of Taps by a bugler or recording, performed by an honor guard detail of at least two Armed Forces members. One member, representing the veteran's branch of service, presents the flag. Additional honors can include a three-volley rifle salute, the U.S. flag draped over the casket, and a final salute at the gravesite. The funeral home also assists families in communicating with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to arrange for a Presidential Memorial Certificate, headstones or markers for graves or memorial plots, burial in a VA national cemetery (including gravesite, opening/closing of grave, grave box, and perpetual care), and reimbursement of burial expenses.”

How to request military funeral honors

By law (10 U.S.C. § 1491), an eligible veteran's funeral can include, on request, an honors detail of at least two service members who fold and present the U.S. flag to the family and play Taps. The funeral director usually makes the request and will need the veteran's DD214 or other discharge papers.
