History of Pikes Peak National Cemetery

In January 2014, VA purchased the land known as the Rolling Hills Ranch, located east of Marksheffel Road, between Bradley and Drennan Roads for $4.49 million. The property is located in El Paso County. In the spring of 2015, VA awarded AES Group, a service-disabled Veteran-owned small business architecture and engineering firm from Parker, Colorado, a contract to design the cemetery. The VA awarded a contract for construction of the cemetery in October 2017. The initial phase of construction will develop approximately 65 acres and provide for approximately 13,300 gravesites, accommodating both casketed and cremated remains.

In addition to gravesites, the cemetery will include other features such as a front entrance on Drennan Road, an administration building, a maintenance building, a flag pole assembly area, a memorial walkway, committal shelters, and a public information center with electronic gravesite locator and restrooms. Other cemetery infrastructure features will include roads, landscaping, utilities and irrigation.

From the Colorado Springs Airport: Head north on Milton E. Proby Parkway Airport Exit Toward Service Road. Use any lane to turn slightly left onto Milton E. Proby Parkway. Turn left onto Creterra Parkway. Merge onto CO-21 South. Turn left onto Bradley Road. Turn left onto S. Marksheffel Blvd. Turn right onto Drennan Road. The destination will be on the right.

Flowers and grounds rules

We welcome and encourage fresh-cut flowers throughout the year and provide flower containers for gravesite display. Cemetery visitors are free to use the containers located in receptacles placed throughout the grounds. Once the blooms are spent or damaged by weather, they are removed. They also may be removed for routine mowing or other maintenance every Wednesday.

Artificial flowers are only allowed after the end of mowing operations in the fall on November 30 and must be removed when mowing resumes in the spring on March 15.

Who can be buried at Pikes Peak National Cemetery?

VA national cemeteries accept a veteran who didn't receive a dishonorable discharge, a service member who died on active duty or in training, the veteran's spouse or surviving spouse (even if they remarried), and minor or, in some cases, unmarried adult dependent children. National Guard and Reserve members qualify under narrower rules. You can ask VA for a pre-need eligibility decision in advance; it does not reserve a gravesite.

Veterans also receive a burial flag, a Presidential Memorial Certificate (presented to the next of kin at the burial) and military funeral honors, which include the playing of Taps and two uniformed service members who present the flag. The committal service is held at a committal shelter, not at the grave, and lasts about 20 minutes. National cemeteries have no viewing facilities, so the funeral itself is held elsewhere.

How do you schedule a burial at Pikes Peak National Cemetery?

1. Gather the veteran's DD214 or other discharge papers, and the deceased's details (Social Security number, dates of birth and death, relationship to the veteran).
2. Fax the discharge papers to the National Cemetery Scheduling Office at 866-900-6417, or email them to [email protected] with the deceased's name in the subject line.
3. You or the funeral director call 800-535-1117 (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET) to request Pikes Peak National Cemetery and a date. National cemeteries hold burials Monday through Friday.
