History of Green Mount Cemetery Soldiers' Lot
Green Mount Cemetery is located one mile west of downtown Montpelier, Vermont. Green Mount Cemetery was incorporated in 1854 by the town of Montpelier, aided by a gift of $1,000 by Calvin Keith, a local attorney. A monument to Keith stands in the cemetery. The entrance building was erected in 1905 and serves as both a chapel and a vault. Today, Green Mount Cemetery is composed of 35 picturesque acres.
A soldiers' lot was created within the cemetery in 1865, when the town of Montpelier donated the tiny lot to the United States. The 450-square-foot soldiers' lot contains eight interments.

Directions
The cemetery is located on State Street (US Highway 2), west of Montpelier. The Soldiers' Lot is located on the west side of the cemetery gatehouse, along the roadway that parallels US Highway 2.
Floral and grounds policy
Cemetery policies are conspicuously posted and readily visible to the public.
Floral arrangements accompanying the casket or urn at the time of burial will be placed on the completed grave. Natural cut flowers may be placed on graves at any time of the year. They will be removed when they become unsightly or when it becomes necessary to facilitate cemetery operations such as mowing. Water will be available at outside faucets from April 15 to October 10.
Weapons policy
VA regulations 38 CFR 1.218 prohibit the carrying of firearms (either openly or concealed), explosives or other dangerous or deadly weapons while on VA property, except for official purposes, such as military funeral honors.
Possession of firearms on any property under the charge and control of VA is prohibited. Offenders may be subject to a fine, removal from the premises, or arrest.
Education and visiting programs
More than half of VA's national cemeteries originated with the Civil War and many are closed to some burials. Other sites were established to serve World War veterans and they continue to expand.
