History of Fort Sheridan National Cemetery
The Fort Sheridan National Cemetery was established in 1889, two years after Fort Sheridan was officially founded. The cemetery has interred in its grounds Veterans from the Civil War up to more recent conflicts. Interments also include World War II era German POWs who were held at both Fort Sheridan and nearby Camp Grant.

Burial in a VA national cemetery is open to all members of the armed forces who have met a minimum active duty service requirement and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.
Directions
From O'Hare Airport: Take I-90E. Take exit 44A for Keeler Ave toward Irving Park Rd/IL-19 and turn left. Merge left onto I-90W/I-94W. Keep right at the fork to continue on I-94 W and follow signs for Milwaukee/Interstate 94 W/Edens Expwy. Continue onto US-41 N (signs for Waukegan). Continue straight onto Skokie Valley Rd. Take a slight right onto S Skokie Hwy (signs for Half Day Rd/IL-22). Turn right onto Half Day Rd. Turn left onto Summit Ave. Turn right onto Old Elm Rd. Turn left onto Sheridan Rd. Turn right then turn left (cemetery will be on the right).
Floral and grounds policy
Cemetery policies are conspicuously posted and readily visible to the public.
Three floral arrangements accompanying the casket or urn at the time of burial will be placed on the completed grave.
Weapons policy
VA regulations 38 CFR 1.218 prohibit the carrying of firearms (either openly or concealed), explosives or other dangerous or deadly weapons while on VA property, except for official purposes, such as military funeral honors.
Possession of firearms on any property under the charge and control of VA is prohibited. Offenders may be subject to a fine, removal from the premises, or arrest.
